Our March General Meeting was held on March 14. The minutes are linked below. Montgomery County Master Gardener Meipo Martin presented an engaging and informative talk on Gardening 101. Her handout is below.

Andrea Altuner was elected Membership Secretary at the meeting. Congratulations Andrea! There are still vacancies for Vice President and Treasurer. Our civic association can only continue to plan events and advocate for our community if we have a fully staffed board. Please contact the board at sligowoods@gmail.com if you would like to be considered for either one of these roles.

Our next event is the Sweep the Creek on the weekend of April 20 & 21. We will be organizing a neighborhood group to participate. Keep an eye out for more information as we get closer to that date.

Spring is just around the corner! The Sligo Woods Civic Association is holding its quarterly general meeting on Thursday, March 14th at 7:00 pm in the Sligo-Dennis Activity Building. We will be holding elections for Vice President, Treasurer, and Membership Secretary. For more information about each board position, click here. Please email us at sligowoods@gmail.com if you are interested in one of our board positions. The Civic Association cannot continue to plan fun community events without a board to support our activities!

In addition, we will have a “Gardening 101” presentation by Meipo Martin of the Montgomery County Master Gardener’s Association to get you ready for spring . The talk will cover:

• What are annuals, biennials, & perennials
• USDA zones
• Site assessment: sun/shade, soil type
• How to pick a plant, plant various plants
• Watering: how, how often, how much, when
• Different fertilizers
• Why weed and what different weeds indicate about the garden
• Learn to ID poison ivy
• Mulching: why and how to mulch, different kinds of mulch
• What is IPM?
• What is organic gardening?
• What tools one really needs to start.

After some technical issues, the Sligo Woods website is back online! Thanks for your patience, and check back frequently for information and updates on our civic association and all that is happening in our Sligo Woods neighborhood!

In December our neighborhood becomes a little bit brighter! The judging for our Holiday Decorating Contest will take place on the weekend of Dec. 16 & 17. This month our speaker will be our neighbor, Lee Glass, who works for the Montgomery County Office of Consumer Protection. He will speak on avoiding home improvement scams and selecting a qualified home service provider. The leaves are falling, pumpkins are out, and neighbors are decorating for Halloween! Please join in a friendly decorating competition and help transform Sligo Woods into a delightfully decorated community!

Judging will occur Saturday, 10/28

Winners will be announced by Sunday, 10/30

You can win in the following categories:

• Best Overall
• Best Theme
• Best Daytime
• Best Nighttime
• Honorable Mention
• Best Block

The rules are the same as in previous years:

1. Open to Sligo Woods residents only, judges excluded.
2.  Address numbers must be visible from the street day and night.
3. Each home can only win in one category.
4. Homes can’t win two years in a row in the same category

Winners receive a certificate and recognition in our member email and website. Winners will be given information with their certificate to have a sign posted in their yard.

Las reglas son las mismas que en años anteriores:

1. Abierto únicamente para residentes de Sligo Woods, excluidos los jueces.
