2019 Halloween Decorating Contest: Winners Announced!

It was another great year for the Halloween decorating contest with Sligo Woods residents showing their “spirit” with great displays.  Our judges had a hard time deciding “witch” displays were the best.  “Ghost” see them before they disappear.  Click here for 2019 winner photos and names.

Tree Walk, Fall 2019

A group of fifteen strolled up Tenbrook Drive, looking at the preponderance of streetside silver (shown here) and red maples, augmented by more tree and shrub diversity in yards.  We  admired  a fine  sycamore,  with  its  multi-colored  bark, as  we turned  onto the connector  path  heading  west  into  Sligo  Creek  Park.  There  we  saw the  contrast of woodland  species–Tuliptrees towering  way  overhead,  spicebush  more  at  eyelevel in the understory.

We talked about plans to remove the smothering porcelainberry vines from the fine, large trees bordering the Kids’ Sledding Hill (Tenbrook at Robin).  That’s a winter project: when leaves have died back and there’s visibility for the careful cutting required.  If interesting in learning more, contact Laura Mol < LauraMolMail |at| gmail >.

Thanks to Helena’s Sheri Arnell for the photo above and for recording a list of trees seen on the Sligo Woods fall tree walk of 2019.

Fall 2019 program prompted by Tenbrook speeding

The civic association’s fall program featured  Mr. Devang Dave from the Traffic Engineering Department of Montgomery County.  He described the County’s process for development of traffic calming and the role that a neighborhood’s civic association can play—in fact, must play, according the County regulations [MoCo Exec Regulation 1-18AM], which is designed to assure community participation and approval as a required part of the process.

Some 18 residents of the Sligo Woods neighborhood were present, and there were clarifying questions and good, informative exchanges in the question-answer opportunity that followed with Mr. Dave (“DAH-veh”).  As planned, Mr. Dave was not discussing any specific plans for our neighborhood streets–which have yet to be proposed–but the focus was on the general process and how we can be engaged in it.

Quarterly programs are now held at the Sligo-Dennis Park building (10200 Sligo Creek Parkway, between playground and basketball courts), a switch from Good Shepherd Church’s building hospitality, which we enjoyed for the first several years of civic association programs/meetings.

Join the Welcome New Neighbors Committee

Would you like to meet new neighbors?

Our welcome new neighbors committee is looking for some additions to our current group. There are two tasks involved. One is to ask our local merchants if they would like to contribute to our bags with an item or coupon. We have had pizza, florist, bakery and gas stations involved in the past.

The second task is to visit new neighbors monthly, let them know about the Sligo Woods Civic Association, answer their questions, and give them our gift bag.

Please email Mary if you are interested or need more information. Our current members work 1 to 4 hours a month, depending on their availability.

Summer Picnic and Craft Fair – June 2nd – Sligo Dennis Park

It’s time for our annual picnic, coming up on Sunday, June 2nd! This year we are holding it, rain or shine, at the Sligo-Dennis Park Building, near the corner of Sligo Creek Parkway and Dennis Avenue, between the basketball courts and playground. Neighbors will be displaying crafts and projects (and some selling crafts) from 11AM to 1:30 PM, and we will be having the picnic from noon to 2pm. There will also be craft activities for the kids.

This is a fun time to chat, eat, see old friends and meet new neighbors. If you can, please bring some food or drink to share, as well as a picnic ground-cloth or portable chair. Any outdoor game equipment you bring will add to the fun. If you like, you can sign up for a particular dish here.

Any questions about the craft fair or picnic please email Emily or call/text 301-509-0779.

Hope to see you there!

Annual meeting elects 2 new board members

A new president was elected by the 2019 annual meeting of the Civic Association.  Thanks and congratulations to Todd Sleeman, who’s lived in the neighborhood–on Calumet–for about seven years.   Also elected to the board was new at-large member Emily Sudbrink, who lives on Tenbrook.  Both were elected by acclamation and for two-year terms.
